About this page

Brussels has a long habit of chess in its cafés, and the clubs still use them. The Ixelles Chess Club, which was founded in a bar, now holds its Tuesday blitz at the Toots Jazz Club in the old centre, its Saturday rapid at the Café Montmartre on the Chaussée de Boondael, and a Chess960 evening at La Tourelle in Ixelles. Those three have current pages behind them.

The others rest on older guides. The Halles Saint-Géry, the Café St-Jacques on the Rue du Marché au Charbon and the Athénée in the Saint-Boniface quarter were named as chess cafés by a guide of March 2025 or by press from 2018, with boards lent against an identity card or on request from the owner, or players mixing with students and locals. No newer trace was found for them, so their cards say unconfirmed; a short visit, or a post from the café, would settle it.
